Edwin Tai is senior portfolio manager, distressed debt at Newfleet Asset Management, an investment management affiliate of Virtus Investment Partners. Mr. Tai is the portfolio manager of the Virtus Credit Opportunities Fund since 2015, as well as dedicated distressed debt strategies in institutional separate accounts and other investment products.
Prior to joining Newfleet in 2015, Mr. Tai was a portfolio manager at Third Avenue Management, responsible for managing approximately $2.5 billion in distressed debt and high yield mutual fund and hedge fund portfolios. He came to Third Avenue from The Seaport Group, where he was a managing director in distressed debt research, specializing in distressed bonds, bank debt, trade claims, and special purpose vehicles. Previously, Mr. Tai was a director in Barclays Capital Distressed Debt Trading Group. Earlier, he was an equity analyst covering global semiconductors at Credit Suisse. Mr. Tai began his career in Lucent Technologies’ Financial Leadership Development Program.
During his career, Mr. Tai has invested in a number of significant restructurings, including Lehman Brothers, Nortel, Reichhold Industries, Washington Mutual, AIG, Fannie & Freddie, General Motors, Lyondell, Ion Media, Ainsworth Lumber, and Calpine.
Mr. Tai is an adjunct professor of finance at Fordham University. He is a CFA® (Chartered Financial Analyst) charter holder. Mr. Tai earned an M.B.A from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. He holds an M.S. in accounting from Babson College and graduated from Rutgers University with a B.S. in finance and a B.A. in economics. Mr. Tai began his career in the investment industry in 2003.
